Extracurricular Activities

 

Students at St. Anthony may choose to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities which are offered after school and during the regular school day.  Information on all of the extra-curricular activities is given to the students at the beginning of the school year. The following is a partial listing of the school’s special programs and all programs are subject to change.

 

Before School Care Program - Before School Care is intended to help families by providing supervision from 7:00-7:30 am.

 

After School Care Program - After School Care is primarily intended to help families by providing a supervised, structured environment for students whose parents are working. However, students having academic difficulties may also attend. Students are given time to do homework, relax, and play games. The program’s goal is to assist the child in completing homework assignments and to aid in developing good study habits. The After School Care staff endeavors to promote the youngsters’ welfare, to see to the safety and happiness of the students, and to meet the needs of the St. Anthony of Padua’s families.

Padua Stars Enrichment Camp – The camp is dedicated to providing a creative, recreational, and cultural environment for the children of St. Anthony of Padua School community during the summer vacation. The camp lasts six weeks. It is staffed by adults assisted by high school counselors. All activities are supervised and conducted by adults at all times.

Altar Servers - Boys and girls in grades4-7 are encouraged to serve as altar servers. This is considered a privilege and the servers’ conduct must reflect it. In order to continue to serve as an altar server, a student must have at least average conduct grades and must show average effort in his scholastic subjects.

Ballet - Ballet classes are offered on an optional basis to boys and girls in Pre-School, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten during the school day and to 1st through5th grade students after school.  The ballet and star dancers programs help students develop coordination and concentration, build self-esteem, help children learn to follow directions, assist in the development of visual perception and balance, and teach children how to handle their bodies for everyday activities and for sports.

Cheerleaders - Students in grades 5-7 may try out for the cheerleaders. Parents are responsible for the cheerleader uniform.  The coach will communicate with the cheerleaders as to the schedule of games and tournaments.  The group requires hard work and dedication, but the students benefit by excellent training.  Any student participating must maintain average grades in academics and conduct in order to remain in the cheerleaders. 

Quiz Bowl - Students in grades 5-7 may join the Quiz Bowl.  This group learns the exciting Quiz Bowl team strategies and participates in various tournaments throughout the year.

Music - The music program provides instruction in vocal, choir, precorder, guitar, keyboard, and band instruments.

  • Band - Students in grades 4-7 are eligible to join the band. This is an Archdiocesan program and it is an excellent opportunity for children to learn music under professional teachers for reasonable fees.
  • Choir - Students in grades 4-7 may audition for the school choir. Practices are held weekly.  Choir members sing at the Thursday liturgies and are required to be in attendance at special events, such as the Christmas Mass, First Communion, Confirmation, Graduation, Music Festival, and other scheduled masses and performances. 
  • Precorder - All students in the 2nd and 3rd grade receive instruction in playing the precorder.  Instruction is provided by the school, but the parents are asked to purchase the recorder from the school.
  • Keyboard – All students in grade 5 receive instruction in keyboard.
  • Guitar – All students in grades 6and 7 receive instruction in guitar.

Art – Art classes are provided during the school day. All students receive art instruction. Students are made aware of shape, color, form, line, texture, and composition. They are exposed to a variety of media in the art. They become aware of the styles of many artists and their history. The program aims to develop an interest and an appreciation of art.

Geography & Spelling Bees – Students in grades5-7 may participate in the Geography and or the Spelling Bee testing. The highest scorer from SAS takes a qualifying exam which may lead to the state competition.

Sports - Boys and girls in grades 5-7 have the opportunity to try out for participation in the CSAL sports program.

Student Council - Students are offered opportunities to develop leadership skills through participation in the Student Council. Two representatives are elected from each class in grades 6-7, and students in Pre-School through 5th grade are represented by Middle School representatives.  The offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer are elected by the Middle School students.  Students in grade 7 who have attended SAS for at least one year and meet the criteria set by the Student Council, are eligible for these positions. All Student Council members must maintain average grades in academics and conduct.
